A Socio-Medical Study on Prostitutes in Seoung Buk Gu and Yong San Gu Areas, Seoul


Abstract
A socio-medical survey on the prostitutes in Seoung Buk Gu and Yong San Gu areas in Seoul was carried out during the period of two months from February 5 to April 6, 1976.
The survey covered 300 prostitutes who were registered at the Seoung Buk Gu and Yong San Gu Health Center, Seoul.
The results of the survey obtained can be summarized as follows.
1) Age distribution: The age group of 20-24 years old constitutes the highest rate with 36.3%. The average age is 25.7 years old and the standard deviation
shows 5.6.¡þ
2) Educational level: Graduates from middle school were the highest rate with 20.0 %, graduates from primary school were next with 18.7%, in completed graduates from college were 2.0% and non-educated were less than 4.0% It means that the educational level of these prostitutes is high comparatively.
3) The previous occupation: House keeping ranked as the highest with 36.7%, .entertainers were next 35.0%.
4) The place of birth Semi-urbanized areas was shown higher rate with 30.3% than rural areas, small towns and large cities.
5) Duration of prostitution: The highest rate was 2 years with 26.7%, the next was 4 years with 25.0%. The average period comparatively, was long with 4.8 years.
6) Motives of becoming prostitutes: Temptation by man or friend was the
highest with 33.7%, employee agency and human traffic were next with 22.3%
however, unexpectedly only 10.0% was caused by economic predicament, family
discord was followed with 12. 0% and 8.3% of them was caused by broken
heart. It means that menial motive is more significant than economic problem.
7) Family relation: Prostitutes who lived with stepmother were the highest
rate at 19 years old for the sexual, intercourse with average age at, 20. 1 years old. In correlation between age of the first experience in sex and the educational background, age of the first experience because gradually lowered as levels of education increased.¡þ
9) Recognition of family or relatives: With regard to the recognition of family ¡þor relatives, the reply that nobody knows about their occupation was the highest rate with 59.7% and recognition of parent was followed with 8.3%.
10) Future hope Most of them (65.0%) wished to change their jobs and desired to have special occupational skills, on the other hand, 10. 0% were obliged to continue prostitution.
11) Prospective wishes for marriage: In future marriage, 60. 0% of them wanted to get marriage with Korean and wish of, marriage with foreigners were with 20.3%.
